Angela Eastman is an artist and teacher based in Hillsborough, North Carolina. She completed the Core Fellowship at Penland School of Craft in 2014 and went on to receive her MFA in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2018. Angela is a multimedia artist who creates sculptures, baskets, and jewelry that combine traditional weaving techniques with original forms.
At the heart of all of my work is a delight in materiality and a conviction that sharing the process of craft creates meaningful connections to histories of labor and place. Weaving is an underpinning of all the work that I do, whether it is making baskets, jewelry, or furniture, and I love the long history of connection to place that accompanies the craft of weaving.
I also work as a farmer at Elysian Fields Farm in Cedar Grove, NC, and have recently planted a plot of willow that I will be able to harvest from for basketry next year. I’m excited to work with locally cultivated and foraged material, rather than relying on commercially produced reed.
I also create sculptural and installation work! You can check out my art practice at https://www.flagmountain.studio/
